Gaining Deeper Knowledge About the Magnetic Stirrer

Understanding Magnetic Stirrers Components & Control Panel:

There are many applications for the magnetic stirrer. In fact many of us are already familiar with the concept with manual stirrers. However the magnetic stirrer open so many more doors in terms of usefulness and functionality that makes them vital in daily use. This is one of the reasons why magnetic stirrers are commonly found in chemical and biological laboratories.

Components of a Magnetic Stirrer

This article make understanding the magnetic stirrer very easy by describing in detail the various components of a magnetic stirrer, the role of several elements and brief introduction to how the control panel can be operated.

Components of a Magnetic Stirrer:

Magnetic stirrers are usually microprocessor controlled and available in several sizes too. However the general principal behind the device remains the same as do the Magnetic Stirrer Components. The main components of a magnetic stirrer include:

  • Microprocessor control unit
  • A motor (this drives the internal magnet)
  • A hotplate (this heats the sample)
  • A probe (this monitors the temperature)

A conventional magnetic stirrer consists of a flat or round bottomed laboratory flask and an immersed magnet which can be either bar, oval, pellet or egg shaped. This essentially depends on the size of the container.

The way this works is when the magnetic stirrer is activated the base magnet effectively rotates the container using the magnet present in the container.

It is important to note that though this process requires that a magnet be immersed into the container with the sample, it is completely harmless and does not contaminate the solution.

On the other hand there is also a downside to using a magnetic stirrer. When it comes to highly viscous liquids the magnetic stirrer may not be of any use. Although it is important to note that the magnetic stirrer have an adjustable speed setting and range from 50 to 1600 rpm.

Functionality of the temperature probe:

The temperature probe is used for monitoring the temperature as the name suggests, however it does have several other functions as well. The temperature probes are connected to the microprocessor hence they can be directly operated via the main control panel of the magnetic stirrer. Thus the temperature can also be monitored on the control panel.

Besides monitoring the temperature the temperature probe doubles as a safety device. Thus when the there is a temperature drop and it is not in safe range an automatic shutdown of device is initiated.

Magnetic Stirrer Control Panel:

Each magnetic stirrer will have a control panel however the control panel itself may differ from brand to brand. There are several important functions that are controlled with the help of a control panel as mentioned below:

  • Powering the device.
  • Controlling the heating function.
  • Controlling the magnetic motor.
  • Control of the motor RPM.
  • Maintaining the right temperature level.
  • Timer operation.

Centrifuge is the best Laboratory Equipment

Centrifuge is the best Laboratory Equipment

  • When you think of a well equipped laboratory, you cannot disregard centrifuge. Actually, without centrifuge, there is no possibility of a laboratory. That’s why it is always referred as centrifuge laboratory equipment.
  • Since its very much usage in a lab, centrifuge has become an integral part of a laboratory. However, in general, it is most widely used in bio-medical research laboratory all over the world.

Use of Centrifuges in a Lab

Lab Centrifuges

  • As it is laboratory equipment, it is specifically used whenever a researcher needs to separate fluid, gas, or liquid based on density. And the whole process of separation is regarded as centrifugation.
  • By centrifugation, complex components of mixture are separated by its density as per the requirements.
  • If its dense particles, they move towards the bottom while the lighter particles move towards the top.
  • The whole process of centrifugation takes place depending upon its motor. If a motor is of a good quality, it moves at high speed.
  • With the help of centrifuge, one can easily separate blood into its components such as white blood cells, red blood cells, plasma and platelets.
  • As the plasma has the lowest density, it floats on the top while others remain in the bottom as per their density.
  • Most common centrifuges are used in biology, chemistry and biochemistry just to differentiate suspensions. Apart from this, centrifuges are also used in dairies for separating milk.
  • In order to separate cream from milk, milk professionals use centrifuges. With the help of centrifugation, one can easily separate water, soluble, non-soluble fats and other substance from milk.
  • And this whole process of separating mainly depends on motors of centrifuges. Because motor gives speed to the process and one can achieve the desired results through centrifugal.
  • Above all, urinalysis can be done through centrifuges. The doctors can identify possible diseases in humans through urine components. After that lab technicians verify the components through microscopes.
  • Blood banks also use centrifuges for identifying various components in blood in order to judge the existing diseases in patients. Thus, all major laboratories use centrifuges in great extent as per their requirements.

Process to craft a Homemade Magnetic Stirrer at a low cost

buy magnetic stirrer

A magnetic stirrer is a device that can be used for mixing of various liquids. The rotating magnetic field used in these stirrers cause the stir bar to spin very quickly, result of which is the stirring of liquids the stir bar is dipped into.

Although magnetic stirrers are available in the market but to save on the cost the same can also be formed with the help of old scrap parts of computer and bit of other things. Let’s discuss in brief as how to perform the task of homemade magnetic stirrer.

Required Items:

  • Neodymium Magnet

  • 80mm 12-volt DC fan (used in desktop computers)

  • Some Nuts, bolts & washers

    • #6-32 x 2” machine screws

    • #6-32 machine screw nuts

    • #6 metal washers

  • External Hard Drive case

  • Flask

  • Magnetic Stir bar

Process:

  1. Selection of Fan: Arrange for an 80mm 12-vold DC fan (suitable for 1-L flask) which is easily available with electronic retailers or you can take out the fan used in any of the scrap desktop laying at your house. The fan offered by the computer part maker Antec is the best in configuration. It would be great to use a fan that has a molex connector and built-in speed selector to avoid prolonged process and for smooth operation of stir plate.

  2. Magnet Sourcing: With the help of screw drivers the magnet can be obtained from an old hard drive or can be purchased from retailers in case of non-availability of old hard drives.

  3. Preparing the Fan for use as the stir plate motor: With the help of the multi-surface adhesive, balance and stick the magnet at the central round surface of the fan. For this first place the magnet at the centre of the fan then check if it is well balances (as proper balancing is very essential) and put a mark on the edges and remove the magnet. Give instructed time to the glue to dry for best results.

  4. If wobbling of the stir plate worries you then it would be a better option to test the stir plate after putting a 2/3rd filled 1-L flask on top of it. Because of the weight all the vibration and trembling will be diminished.

  5. Final Preparation: Although the magnetic stirrer can be created by using a wooden cigar box also instead of the external hard drive case but using the hard drive case always makes the work easier. Main advantages of using hard drive cases are:

  1. Built in power supply

  2. Inexpensive hard drive cases

  3. Preinstalled small fan inside to expel heat

Now firstly clean the case and try to make some space inside by cutting or unplugging the hard drive data cable which looks like a wide plastic ribbon. For mounting the fan you will need to use the screws, nuts and washers. By putting the fan on the top centre you can mark four holes where after drilling your screws, neoprene washer and nuts can be fixed. The only thing you need to make sure is that the fan spins freely without any obstacles.

You can also mount the fan with the help of adhesive instead of the screws; just confirm the free spinning of the fan. Now power the fan by connecting it with the inbuilt 4-pin power connector and that’s it. Connect the drive’s plug with the wall socket and use the homemade magnetic stirrer created at a very low cost. Start off with a slow speed and rationally increase the speed when the plate starts to spin smoothly.
